Candidacy Opens for New Prosecutor General
The President's Office announced that applications will be accepted until 12:00 pm on September 11.
Interested candidates are required to submit their application forms and relevant documents to the President's Office between 08:30 am and 12:00 pm on September 10-11. The necessary forms can be downloaded from the President's Office website.
Once the application period closes, the President’s Office will vet the candidates before forwarding the final nominations to Parliament for approval.
Hussain Shameem, who served as Prosecutor General from December 8, 2019, to August 22, 2024, was dismissed by Parliament in a no-confidence vote last week. Despite submitting his resignation ahead of the vote, Parliament proceeded with the no-confidence motion, citing that the President's Office had not yet received his resignation letter. The motion passed with a significant majority of 65-9.
According to the law, a new Prosecutor General must be appointed within 30 days of the position becoming vacant. Parliament, currently in recess, will need to hold an extraordinary session to appoint Shameem’s replacement.
