Maldives Government Declares September 5th a Public Holiday

The Maldives government has announced that Thursday, September 5th, will be observed as a government holiday to mark this year's National Day.

The declaration was made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, according to a statement issued by the President's Office on Sunday.

This announcement follows a previous declaration by President Muizzu, who designated August 13th, a Wednesday, as a public holiday due to severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall affecting various parts of the country, particularly the Greater Malé area.

National Day in the Maldives is celebrated to commemorate the liberation of the Maldivian people from Portuguese colonial rule by Mohamed Thakurufaanu (Bodu Thakurufaanu) on 1st Rabeeul-Awwal 981, according to historical records.
