$9.5 Million Education Transformation Initiative Launched in Maldives

The Maldives has launched a $9.5 million project aimed at transforming its education sector.

The 'Education Transformation Initiative' was officially unveiled by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef during a ceremony at Hotel Jen on Thursday, where the program document and project website were also introduced.

Funded through a grant from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), the project is designed to enhance various aspects of the Maldivian education system. The initiative is divided into three grants:

  1. A $5 million system transformation grant with UNICEF as the grant agent.
  2. A $1.5 million system capacity grant, also managed by UNICEF.
  3. A $3 million multiplier grant with the World Bank as the grant agent.

Key efforts under the project will focus on improving the quality of education, training teachers, ensuring schools are safe for children, promoting equality in educational opportunities, and developing additional schools.

This initiative follows Maldives' recent appointment as a board member of the GPE, a position it will hold until 2026.
