PG Shameem Resigns Amidst Parliamentary No-Confidence Debate

Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has resigned as the Maldivian Parliament debated a no-confidence motion against him on Thursday night.

The motion was introduced by Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid, a prominent figure in the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). The Judiciary Committee, which reviewed the motion, voted earlier in favor of Shameem's removal. The committee's decision came after summoning him for a closed-door session to respond to the allegations.

The motion passed in the committee with a vote of 8-2. The two dissenting votes came from members of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), while the committee’s chair, Manadhoo MP Husnee Mubarak, abstained from the vote.

A final vote on the motion was scheduled for 21:00 last night, but Shameem tendered his resignation shortly after the parliamentary session commenced and the debate continued.
