Muhammad Yunus to Lead Bangladesh’s Interim Government After Sheikh Hasina Flees

Bangladesh's Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed to head the interim government following the resignation and departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid a mass student-led uprising.

The announcement was made early Wednesday by Joynal Abedin, press secretary to President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The composition of the Yunus-led interim government will be determined after discussions with political parties and other stakeholders.

The decision came after a five-hour meeting late Tuesday involving student protest leaders, military chiefs, civil society members, and business leaders at the president's residence.

Student leaders, who had proposed Yunus for the role, confirmed that the 83-year-old microfinance pioneer had agreed and would return from Paris soon. They expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the talks, with student leader Nahid Islam describing the discussions as “fruitful” and noting the president’s commitment to forming the interim government swiftly.
