Public Accounts Committee to Discuss State Finances Behind Closed Doors

The Parliaments Public Accounts Committee has decided to hold closed-door meetings to discuss the states expenses and debt. This decision follows a request from the Finance Ministry.

During a meeting on Tuesday, Committee Chairperson and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim disclosed that the Committee had received three documents from the Finance Ministry, including the Medium-Term Fiscal Strategy 2024-2026 and the state’s debt management strategy. The Ministry requested confidentiality for these documents.

Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau supported the confidentiality request, and his proposal was endorsed by Vice Chairperson and Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem. Of the eight members present, four initially voted for confidentiality. In a second round of voting, five members supported the motion.

Typically, financial statements shared with the Public Accounts Committee are made public and have been available on the Finance Ministry’s website since 2018.
