Maldives Opens Opportunities for Helicopter Services
The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation announced the call for expressions of interest (EoI) in the state gazette, highlighting the potential for enhanced patient transfers, search and rescue missions, and improved tourism connectivity.
The selected operator will receive a 10-year exclusive contract for guest transfers. Proposals must align with the ministry's strategic objectives and action plan. Interested parties can submit their EOIs either at the ministry's office in Hulhumale' or via email by 14:00hrs on August 19th.
Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen noted the potential of helicopter services to meet the demand for nighttime travel, which seaplanes cannot fulfill. The government has recently utilized two Indian-gifted helicopters and Maldivian's new air ambulance services for patient transport.
Previously, commercial helicopter services were available in the Maldives in the 1990s but were discontinued after fatal crashes in 1999. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration has also promised to replace Indian military personnel with civilian operators for these services.
