Abdul Raheem Warns Yameen Against Provoking Turmoil

PNC Chairperson and Parliament Speaker, Abdul Raheem Abdul Raheem, has issued a stark warning to former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, cautioning him against stirring political trouble.

During a PNC event on Tuesday night, Abdul Raheem responded forcefully to Yameen's recent criticisms. Yameen had accused President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of being too timid to investigate corruption, suggesting that Abdul Raheem’s cases would be the first probed if the President had the courage.

In retort, Abdul Raheem challenged to form an independent committee, including Yameen, to investigate his cases. "Please, go ahead and establish [a committee] and task it with investigating my cases. The committee’s chair should be President Yameen. Deputies should be Dr. [Mohamed] Jameel, [Mohamed] Maleeh. Members should be Hussain Waheed and [Colonel (Retired) Ahmed Fayaz] Papa. I am ready to respond,” he stated.

Abdul Raheem also proposed creating an additional committee, chaired by himself, to probe the MMPRC corruption case, suggesting significant revelations would follow.

He questioned the legitimacy of Yameen’s wealth, pointing out that while Yameen concluded his term with over MVR 500 million in his accounts, he had less than MVR 100,000 when he became president in 2013. "Hence, I have said even the previous night, do not attempt to throw stones at a beehive," he emphasized.

Despite expressing respect for Yameen, Abdul Raheem lamented the former president’s apparent inability to understand the people. He suggested Yameen distanced himself from President Muizzu out of unwillingness to see anyone else hold the presidency.

Abdul Raheem concluded by asserting that President Muizzu’s administration would surpass Yameen’s in terms of development, bringing twice as much progress to the Maldives.
