URA Confirms Accuracy of Utility Bills Amidst Public Concerns

The Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) has confirmed that recent electricity bills have been correctly charged, stating no discrepancies were found in the billing process.

This statement comes amidst growing public complaints about rising utility costs over the past few months.

During a recent appearance on SSTV's "Baaru Hathareh" program, Fenaka Corporation's Managing Director, Muaz Mohamed Rasheed, urged URA to investigate the issue of increasing utility bills. In response, URA collected data from utility providers and concluded that the bills were accurate, attributing the higher costs to increased electricity usage.

Although no official complaints have been lodged with URA, the authority acknowledged public concerns raised on social media and assured it would investigate any formal queries.

Alongside Fenaka Corporation, State Electric Company (STELCO) supplies electricity across the Maldives. A STELCO media official recently noted a decrease in utility bills for August, with only a few consumers seeing increases. Both companies have attributed the higher bills to increased consumption rather than billing errors.

Previously, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced discounts on utility bills for the Islamic sacred month of Ramadan, which were reflected in the March and April bills.

Despite the ongoing public outcry, URA has yet to issue an official statement addressing the concerns.
