Yameen Criticizes Maldives' Engagement with Samoa Agreement

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that he does not believe that even if the Maldives signs the Samoa Agreement between the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) and the European Union(EU), the country's exports will be eased.

The Samoa agreement was signed after the government proposed reservations for articles that were against Islamic principles and the Constitution, he said. Mohamed Muizzu's government said.

Yameen told the PNF meeting that if such reservations were made, the country would not be able to relax the fish exported from the country. Yameen said that under such an agreement, concessions are available only to countries that agree to religious freedom and fundamental human rights.

Yameen said clerics also believe that the Samoa agreement had "anti-Islamic elements.

Yameen said that during his tenure as well as under former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, he went to Europe to seek tax relief for pulses, but the relief was not given due to lack of liberal values and poor human rights.

Yameen also called on Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and Attorney General Ahmed Muizzu to explain.

The Samoa agreement was signed by 79 OAPPS countries and 27 european union countries. The Maldives became a full member of the OACPS on December 9, 2022.
