President Muizzu Delays Ban on Small Plastic Bottles to 2026

President Mohamed Muizzu has issued a decree delaying the ban on the import, manufacture, and sale of plastic bottles of 1 liter or less until 2026.

The original prohibition, set to begin in August 2023, was previously postponed to August 2024. The new decree specifies that the import and manufacture of these small plastic bottles will now be banned starting December 1, 2025, with the sale prohibition commencing on March 1, 2026.

This decree also addresses 14 specific single-use plastic (SUP) items, identifying them as harmful to the environment. The timeline for phasing out these items, including plastic bottles, has been adjusted accordingly. This marks the second revision of the ban dates, reflecting ongoing considerations in the implementation of environmental policies in the Maldives.
