Ismail Habeeb Appointed as New HRCM Member

Parliament on Wednesday approved the appointment of Ismail Habeeb, former Vice President of the Election Commission, to the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).

The position became vacant after Dr. Ahmed Adhuham Abdulla, the former Vice President of the commission, resigned in October. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih nominated Habeeb on July 15.

The parliamentary committee on human rights conducted an interview with Habeeb on Tuesday and subsequently endorsed his appointment. During Wednesday's parliamentary session, the committee's report was put to a vote, resulting in 74 members approving Habeeb's appointment. However, three members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) opposed the decision: Kendhoo Constituency Member Mauroof Zakir, Maradhoo Constituency Member Ahmed Didi, and Keyodhoo Constituency Member Mohamed Niushad. Among MDP members, only Dr. Ahmed Shamheed from Hulhumale South constituency and Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa voted in favor.

Habeeb had previously resigned from the Election Commission in March after serving two terms, with his tenure starting in March 2014 and reappointment in March 2019.

The current members of the HRCM are President Maryam Muna, Moomina Waheed, Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq, and Samau Ahmed Najeeb.
