Deputy Leader of PNC’s Parliamentary Group, Ahmed Toriq, Resigns
Thoriq, who represents the Mahibadhoo constituency, tendered his resignation on Sunday.
The specific reason for Thoriq's decision remains unclear. While several PNC lawmakers have confirmed his resignation, Thoriq himself has not yet commented on the matter. A senior PNC official stated that Thoriq’s resignation was not driven by political motivations but did not provide further details.
Thoriq, alongside Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid and Vilimale’ MP Mohamed Ismail, was elected as a deputy leader of PNC’s parliamentary group on May 22, following a recommendation from the party’s leader, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
One of the most senior members of the 20th parliamentary assembly, Thoriq is also among the five lawmakers who stand in for the deputy speaker when needed. A former national football star, Thoriq has been serving in Parliament since 2014 and is currently campaigning for the presidency of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).
