Impeachment Procedures for President and Vice President Revised

The 20th Maldivian Parliament has revised the impeachment procedures for the president and vice president, initially set by the 19th Parliament.

The General Committee reviewed and updated the process, citing concerns over the insufficient duration initially established.

Previously, a seven-member committee was required to investigate impeachment motions within five days. The new amendment extends this deadline to ten days. The notice period for appearing at impeachment investigations has been increased from two hours to five days.

Additionally, the notice period for committee meetings has been extended from six hours to 24 hours, and the president's response time to the committee's report has been extended from two days to seven days.

The amendments were passed today with 64 out of 65 members voting in favor.
