Minister of Education Praises Former President Gayyoom for Revolutionary Advancements in Maldivian Education

In a ceremony marking the 1000-day countdown to Majeedhiya School's 100th anniversary, Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu lauded former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom for his significant contributions to the educational sector in the Maldives.

Dr. Shafeeu commended Gayyoom's persistent efforts and substantial investments in education during his 30-year administration, which led to the widespread availability of education across all Maldivian islands. He highlighted that, even as late as 2001, many islands lacked the capacity to teach O'level standards. However, thanks to Gayyoom's dedication, this gap was bridged, and education was made accessible to all.

A key reform attributed to Gayyoom's tenure was the end of the practice of expelling students who failed subjects. Instead, these students were given the opportunity to continue their studies and sit for their O'levels. Dr. Shafeeu acknowledged the challenges faced by the Education Ministry at the time in implementing this change, noting that there was significant public skepticism regarding the potential impact on educational standards.

"At that time, there were concerns about the introduction of what was perceived as auto-promotion," Dr. Shafeeu remarked. "Critics questioned how we could achieve results and feared it would lower the standard of education." Despite these initial reservations, the reform ensured that no child under the age of 16 is deprived of education today, a testament to Gayyoom's foresight.

Dr. Shafeeu also emphasized the historical significance of Majeedhiya School, noting that all eight presidents of the Maldives had studied there. He assured that the 100th anniversary of the school, which began teaching on April 19, 1927, would be given high precedence by both the Ministry and the government.

Under Gayyoom's leadership, foundational changes were made to establish basic education for all Maldivians. He was instrumental in setting up atoll education centers and community schools, and his efforts, along with those of senior officials at the Education Ministry, were pivotal in raising the country's literacy rate.
