Maldivian Women Outlive Men by Seven Years, Statistics Show

The Maldives Bureau of Statistics has revealed that the average life expectancy for women in the Maldives surpasses that of men by nearly seven years.

This was announced by Chief Statistician Aishath Hassan during her presentation at the Maldives Finance Forum, organized by the Maldives Pension Administration Office (MPAO) yesterday.

According to the latest data, the median age of the Maldivian population is now 80 years. Aishath Hassan noted that, historically, Maldivian men lived longer than women up until 1995.

The statistics also highlight a significant decline in the birth rate since 2013, with the most recent census reporting an average of 1.7 children per woman. Additionally, there has been an increase in youth mortality due to illnesses such as strokes and cancer since 2019.

Aishath Hassan pointed out that 50 percent of the Maldivian population is currently under 30 years of age, indicating a rising elderly community. Projections suggest that by 2054, the senior citizen demographic will dominate the population.

Furthermore, the Bureau predicts that expatriates will make up 43 percent of the Maldivian populace by 2054, with four out of ten residents being foreigners. It is also estimated that 64 percent of the country's total population will be concentrated in the Greater Male' region.
