Blind Brother of Former President Leads Mother's Funeral Prayer
Moomina, a mother of 13, passed away yesterday morning at ADK Hospital after a prolonged illness. Her funeral was held after Maghrib prayer, with her son Moosa leading the prayer, a role typically performed by the Imam of the Islamic Centre.
Moosa, an Imam at the main mosque on Hinnavaru island and a Hafiz of the Qur’an, learned the entire Qur’an by heart through special classes for blind students offered by Care Society, Mauhadh classes, and self-study using tape-recorded recitations. In a previous interview with Mihaaru, Moosa shared his journey of memorizing the Qur’an despite his blindness. Two of Moomina's other children are also Hafizs of the Qur’an.
Images from the funeral show Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed assisting Moosa in facing the Qibla to commence the prayer. The funeral was attended by numerous government officials and long-term government employees, with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Moomina’s other sons positioned in the front row.
Moomina was also the mother of former Hulhumalé MP Ali Niyaz, Majeediyya School’s Principal Aishath Mohamed, and Fathimath Mohamed Solih, the long-term Personal Secretary to the President at the President’s Office.
