MIFCO Lays Off Workers Amid Government Cost-Cutting Measures

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has initiated significant layoffs as part of the government's cost-cutting measures.

While the company has not disclosed the exact number of dismissed workers, sources from MIFCO indicated that over 30 employees have been laid off from the Kooddoo operations.

Ibrahim Saeed (Cade), MIFCO's media official, confirmed that the job cuts currently affect only Kooddoo but noted that downsizing will extend to other operations in the coming days. Saeed explained that the layoffs targeted employees with poor attendance records or prolonged absenteeism, emphasizing that the dismissals adhered to established rules and regulations.

This development follows the Finance Ministry's presentation of an austerity paper to the cabinet last month, which has yet to be officially implemented despite approval. Notably, the number of political appointments remains unchanged, even as layoffs continue in government-owned companies.
