Maldives Broadcasting Commission To Introduce Journalist Accreditation Policy

The Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) has released a new policy outlining procedures for accrediting journalists and issuing press passes, aimed at enhancing standards within the broadcasting sector.

In a statement issued on Monday, BroadCom stated that the accreditation of journalists is intended to promote high-quality service delivery and establish minimum qualifications and experience standards for individuals in the journalism field.

The commission emphasized the creation of a comprehensive registry for journalists employed in broadcasting, facilitating the issuance of official press passes.

According to BroadCom, applicants must meet specific criteria for accreditation, including holding at least a level three certificate in broadcasting or a related field, along with a minimum of three years' experience. Prospective journalists are required to undergo a structured training program covering various aspects such as broadcasting ethics, safeguarding children's and women's rights, guidelines for reporting on natural disasters and protests, and protocols for political content during elections.

A nominal fee of MVR 100 is applicable for the training program, which upon completion will enable journalists to obtain a press pass valid for five years.
