President Attends Modi’s Historic Third Inauguration
The event took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan, India’s presidential palace in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Modi, the first leader since Jawaharlal Nehru to serve three terms, was sworn in by Indian President Droupadi Murmu. The ceremony was attended by thousands of dignitaries, including leaders from neighboring countries.
Following the oath-taking, President Muizzu participated in a commemorative photograph with Prime Minister Modi and other heads of state and government.
The President’s Office described Muizzu's attendance as a positive indicator of the strengthening relations between Maldives and India.
President Muizzu’s predecessor, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, attended Modi’s first inauguration in 2014, while Modi attended the inauguration of former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Despite recent tensions following derogatory remarks made by three senior Maldivian officials towards Modi, the Maldivian government has asserted that these comments do not reflect its official stance. The officials are currently suspended.
Muizzu, elected with Yameen’s backing and often labeled as ‘pro-China’, contrasts with his predecessor Solih, who was seen as ‘pro-India’
