Maldives Launches National Waste Management Policy
At a special ceremony, Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal unveiled the logo and brand for "Magey Saafu Raajje," while Minister Thoriq Ibrahim launched the National Waste and Resource Management Policy and Strategy.
"Magey Saafu Raajje" is a five-year plan aimed at sustainably improving waste management and environmental cleanliness in the Maldives. The policy targets 12 key objectives, including comprehensive waste management across islands, promoting greener practices, and collaborating with private entities to enhance these measures.
Minister Thoriq stressed the importance of providing sustainable, eco-friendly waste management facilities to all Maldivian islands. He noted that having a designated policy will support efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of poor waste management.
The policy also includes measures to hold those involved in the export and import of goods accountable for waste management, with the "Accident Producer Responsibility" initiative aimed at reducing waste generated by the tourism industry.
Furthermore, Minister Thoriq confirmed the establishment of a waste management center in Thilafushi, Kaafu Atoll, which will incinerate 500 tonnes of waste daily using an environmentally friendly system. He warned that the current daily waste transported to Thilafushi is 700 tonnes and could rise to 1,000 tonnes within the next 2-3 years without robust measures.
The government is also strengthening the waste management system in cities and large islands through Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO).
