President Muizzu Launches 5 Million Trees Plantation Program

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the ambitious 5 Million Trees Plantation Program, a key component of his presidential pledge to combat climate change and promote a greener Maldives.

Announced at last year's COP28 conference, the initiative aims to plant 5 million trees over the next five years.

The program was officially launched today at Lonuziyaaraiy Park, where President Muizzu, accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, and other senior officials, participated in the initial tree planting ceremony. The event also saw the presence of Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Male' Mayor Adam Azim, and various Cabinet Ministers.

The trees planted today are native species at risk of extinction, including 22 types of fruit trees, shade trees, flowering trees, and those used in traditional Dhivehi medicine. The government plans to extend the program to all inhabited islands and resorts across the Maldives.

Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim stated that over the next five years, more than 90 varieties of trees will be planted and monitored for carbon sequestration.
