On Tuesday, the newly elected Members of Parliament for the Maldives were officially sworn in for their five-year term. Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan administered the oath of office to the 93 members during a morning ceremony.
The 20th Parliament convened with the election of the Speaker and Vice-Speaker, held at 10:30 am on the same day. The ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC) holds a dominant position with 75 members. Including seats from the Jumhooree Party (JP), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and Maldives National Party (MNP), the pro-government bloc increases to 79 members, securing a supermajority capable of amending the constitution.
The Parliament also includes 2 independent members and 12 opposition members from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). In a meeting held last Wednesday at Muliaage, the PNC Parliamentary Group nominated Abdul Raheem for Speaker and Ahmed Nazim for Deputy Speaker.
