Unpaid Fishermen's Dues Reach MVR 62 Million

Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam announced that MVR 62 million remains unpaid to fishermen as of May 23. Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Minister Shiyam confirmed that payments to fishermen had been made up until April 22.

The most recent disbursement amounted to MVR 22 million, and since the current administration took office, a total of MVR 881 million has been paid to fishermen. Despite efforts to address the outstanding payments, the Minister acknowledged the financial difficulties faced by MIFCO at the month's end.

"We are working to pay the fishermen as soon as possible, but MIFCO also encounters financial challenges. However, we are committed to resolving this issue promptly," stated Minister Shiyam.

He emphasized that both MIFCO and the government are prioritizing the payment of fishermen's dues. "The Finance Minister is focused on reducing government expenditure and ensuring timely bill payments," he added.

Efforts are ongoing to improve the state's financial situation, which, if successful, would ease MIFCO's financial strain and expedite the release of funds to the fishermen.

Earlier this year, unpaid dues in February led to protests in Kooddoo, which subsided after MIFCO settled most of the outstanding amounts.
