President Muizzu Ratifies Comprehensive Food Safety Act

On Thursday, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ratified the Food Safety Act (Act No. 6/2024) in the Maldives, marking a significant step towards enhancing the nation's food safety regulations.

The parliament had passed the bill during its twenty-sixth sitting of the first session this year on May 13, 2024.

The new Food Safety Act establishes a robust framework aimed at regulating food safety across all sectors. It ensures that all food products, whether locally produced, imported, or exported, are free from harmful substances and meet established safety standards.

Key provisions of the Act include detailed procedures and standards that must be followed by all stakeholders in the food industry. These guidelines cover the safety of food items for human consumption, encompassing aspects such as packaging, labeling, preservation, storage, trade, supply, and distribution.

The Act also sets forth licensing requirements and hygiene standards for businesses and personnel involved in food processing operations, ensuring compliance to guarantee the safety of food products.
