PNC Nominates Adhurey for Speaker and Nazim for Deputy Speaker

The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has approved the nominations of Fonadhoo MP-elect Abdulraheem Abdulla (Adhurey) for Speaker and Dhiggaru MP-elect Ahmed Nazim for Deputy Speaker of the 20th parliamentary assembly.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu put forward the names during a meeting at Muleeaage with top officials from state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and PNC's parliamentary-elect members. The nominations were unanimously approved.

Despite earlier speculation that Abdulraheem would be appointed Speaker, he stated he would accept any decision made by President Muizzu and denied having personal agendas or actively seeking the position.

Nazim, who previously served as Speaker of the 18th parliamentary assembly, lost his seat after receiving a 25-year jail sentence for corruption.

The PNC's strength in the 20th parliamentary assembly will reach 74 members, including seven independent MPs who joined the party post-election. The new parliamentary assembly will commence on Tuesday, with the first sitting dedicated to electing the Speaker and Deputy Speaker following the oath-taking ceremony.
