Bassam Adam Appointed Interim Head of MMPRC Amid Leadership Changes

The Deputy Managing Director of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Bassam Adam, has been appointed as the interim head of the state tourism board. The Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) confirmed Bassam's temporary appointment on Thursday via X.

Bassam's appointment comes after the recent termination of MMPRC's Managing Director, Fathmath Thaufeeq, on Wednesday, and the resignation of MMPRC Chairperson Aysha Nurain Janah. Notably, Bassam had previously faced allegations of sexually harassing female employees at MMPRC. Although initially reported as suspended on April 2, it was later clarified that he had voluntarily stepped back from his duties.

Tensions have been reported between the Minister of Tourism, Ibrahim Faisal, and MMPRC executives over various management issues, though Minister Faisal has denied these rumors.

This leadership change at MMPRC is part of a broader pattern, following the recent dismissals of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO)'s CEO Ahmed Samah Rasheed and Housing Development Corporation (HDC)'s Chairman Ahmed Zuhoor. The government stated on Thursday that these changes are part of its efforts to improve state operations.
