Information Commissioner to Investigate RTI Law Violation by President's Office

Information Commissioner Ahmed Ahid Rasheed announced a formal investigation into the President's Office for violating the Right to Information (RTI) Act, with potential actions against those responsible.

The announcement was made during a hearing regarding the President's Office's failure to respond to Adhadhu's RTI queries about President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's official visit to Turkey. Despite repeated requests, the President's Office legal team did not attend the hearing, having previously postponed three other hearings.

Commissioner Ahid ordered the President's Office to provide the requested information within three days and stated that an investigation would determine why the RTI Act was not being implemented and who was responsible. He emphasized that action would be taken against those found negligent.

Since President Muizzu took office in November, many RTI requests submitted to the President's Office have gone unanswered, and officials have consistently failed to attend Information Commissioner's Office hearings. Commissioner Ahid warned that the President’s Office's non-compliance could undermine the RTI altogether.
