OIC Summit: Islamic Minister Calls for Justice for Palestinian People

Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the Islamic Minister, has urged Islamic nations to take stronger action to hold Israel accountable for its genocidal acts against the Palestinian people.

Speaking at the 15th Session of the Islamic Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Banjul, The Gambia, from May 4–5, 2024, under the theme “Enhancing Unity and Solidarity through Dialogue for Sustainable Development,” Dr. Saeed delivered the national statement as President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's Special Envoy.

In addition to addressing the Palestinian crisis, the Maldives also appealed for cooperation with The Gambia to prevent Rohingya genocide, stressing the importance of intervening in their case against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice. Dr. Saeed emphasized the need to combat Islamophobia by promoting the true teachings of Islam, which advocate peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and tolerance.

The Islamic Summit of the OIC convenes every three years, bringing together leaders of Islamic nations to deliberate on policy decisions and provide guidance on Ummah-related issues as outlined in the OIC Charter. This year, The Gambia assumed the chairmanship of the summit from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The summit is expected to adopt three outcome documents, including a resolution on the issue of Palestine and Al-Quds Ash-Sharif.

Since joining in 1976, the Maldives has been an active member of the OIC, which comprises 57 member states.
