STELCO Responds to Criticism with Electricity Bill Discounts

Following public outcry, State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced plans to offer discounts on electricity bills.

In a social media post, STELCO's Managing Director, Hussain Fahmy, revealed the decision to provide discounts for electricity consumed during the fasting month of Ramadan, in line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's commitment. He assured that adjustments would be made to previously issued bills and reissued promptly.

This decision comes amid widespread criticism, particularly from residents of outer atolls, regarding recent increases in electricity bills. Complaints flooded social media platforms, highlighting substantial hikes in bills.

Citizens expressed frustration over what they perceived as inflated bills, some reporting quadruple increases compared to previous months, despite no significant change in usage. Concerns were raised about bill accuracy and whether there was an oversight mechanism in place.

In response, Fahmy defended STELCO's billing practices, attributing the higher bills to increased electricity consumption during the heatwave. He emphasized adherence to government directives and highlighted the provision of MVR 20 million in discounts for Ramadan, including for new households.

This issue of rising electricity bills is not new, with similar concerns raised previously. STELCO attributed high consumption to rising temperatures linked to global warming, noting an average increase from 500 to 560 units during warmer months.

In light of recent attention on the issue, the government had urged authorities to reduce water and electricity bills during Ramadan, coinciding with parliamentary elections.

As discussions continue around the transparency and accuracy of electricity billing, STELCO's decision to offer discounts aims to address public concerns and restore confidence in the utility provider.
