Dermot Mulroney Reflects on Career Impact of "My Best Friend’s Wedding" Movie Poster

Dermot Mulroney opened up about the unexpected consequences of starring in the 1997 hit rom-com "My Best Friends Wedding," revealing that it led to a year-long drought in his acting opportunities.

Despite the film's success, Mulroney found himself struggling to land roles after its release. He attributed this to his small presence on the movie poster, jokingly referring to himself as the "little guy on the cake." Reflecting on the experience, he mused, "I thought, gosh, you guys, if you’d made me a little bigger, maybe I could have gotten a job."

Directed by P.J. Hogan, "My Best Friend’s Wedding" centers on a woman who realizes her love for her longtime friend just before his wedding, leading to comedic attempts to win him over.

Nevertheless, Mulroney persevered in his Hollywood career, appearing in numerous projects following the rom-com's release. Recently, he returned to the genre with "Anyone but You," where he plays the father of one of the leads.

Sharing advice with his co-star Glen Powell, Mulroney emphasized the lasting impact of romantic comedies. He urged Powell not to underestimate their significance, noting, "What these movies mean to people will last for decades." He emphasized that the enduring appeal of rom-coms surpasses the appeal of other genres and continues to resonate with audiences long after their release.
