Intense Rains in Southern China Trigger Massive Floods, Threaten Millions

Guangdong province, with its population of 127 million, has witnessed extensive flooding, leading to the relocation of over 110,000 residents, as reported by state media citing local authorities.

Tragically, the floods have claimed the lives of at least four individuals in Guangdong, including a heroic rescue worker, with another ten people reported missing.

Since April 16, relentless torrential rains have pounded the Pearl River Delta, a vital manufacturing hub and densely populated area. Several weather stations in Guangdong have recorded unprecedented rainfall for April.

The Pearl River basin, prone to seasonal flooding from April to September, has experienced increasingly severe rainstorms and floods in recent years. Experts attribute this to the worsening climate crisis, which exacerbates extreme weather events.

Yin Zhijie, a leading hydrological forecaster, highlighted the alarming trend of annual extreme rainfall and flooding, underscoring the impact of climate change.

Last year witnessed a surge in intense rainfall during the flood season, with numerous weather stations across China setting records for daily and monthly rainfall.

Recent data shows over 44 rivers in the Pearl River basin surpassing warning levels, heightening the risk of overflow. Of particular concern is the Bei River, where authorities anticipate a "once a century" flood reaching 5.8 meters above the warning limit.

Footage from affected areas depicts villages submerged under muddy waters, vehicles swept away, and landslides wreaking havoc in mountainous regions. The situation has prompted the evacuation of thousands and disruptions to daily life, including school closures and flight cancellations.

With heavy rainfall forecasted to persist, authorities have elevated flood control measures to level 2, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The economic toll is already significant, with over 80 homes destroyed or damaged, resulting in nearly $20 million in direct losses.

As southern China braces for further downpours, the resilience of communities and the effectiveness of disaster response efforts will be crucial in mitigating the impact of these devastating floods.
