Police Investigate Violent Altercation Among Children in Rasdhoo Mosque

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) is currently investigating a grave incident involving a group of children who violently harassed another child inside a mosque in Alif Alif Atoll Rasdhoo on Friday evening.

According to a local resident, the victim is from Mathiveri island and had traveled to Rasdhoo for a holiday with his family.

The incident took place during Tarawih prayers and was recorded, with the audio of the prayer recitation audible in the background, and subsequently shared on social media. Police have cautioned against sharing the video, as its content is distressing and could compromise the dignity of a child.

The video depicts a child being bullied inside a restroom, subjected to verbal and physical assault by other children. In the lengthy and violent footage, the child is seen being soaked with water from his own bottle and pleading on his knees to be released.

The incident sparked outrage among the residents of Rasdhoo, leading to gatherings outside the homes of the children involved in the assault.

Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau confirmed the incident on Rasdhoo in a statement posted on social media platform X on Friday night, highlighting that it is being treated as a serious matter.

In response to the surfaced video, Minister for Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan stated on social media platform X that the police had been alerted and are conducting a thorough investigation to apprehend the perpetrator, assuring that strict action would be taken against them.

A message circulated in the Police media WhatsApp group disclosed that the investigation had identified two children, aged 13 and 14, as the primary aggressors.

"The injured child is receiving necessary psycho-social support in collaboration with relevant authorities," stated the police in an official statement.
