China Southern Airlines Plans to Expand with 17 New International Routes

China Southern Airlines inaugurated its inaugural flight between Beijing and Macau on Monday, signaling its intention to bolster international travel by adding 17 new routes. The airline revealed plans to introduce these routes, including destinations such as Amsterdam, London, Doha, Riyadh, and Tehran, before October 26.

Macau, renowned as the world's largest gambling hub and a popular tourist destination, marks a strategic addition to China Southern's network. Despite slow recovery in the international airline industry post-pandemic restrictions, the airline aims to tap into increasing demand for global travel. Currently, China Southern's international route network has rebounded to 80% of its 2019 levels, with hopes to reach 85% by year-end.

While China Southern reported an annual loss last Wednesday due to various factors, including weak consumer spending power and supply chain disruptions, it remains optimistic about the potential revival of international travel. China's aviation regulator anticipates that international flights to and from the country will reach approximately 6,000 per week by the end of the year, representing about 80% of pre-COVID levels.
