President Announces Expansion of Agriculture Beyond Uthuru Thila Falhu

President Muizzu has announced plans to expand agriculture to other islands alongside Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF), which has been designated as the primary hub for agricultural production. This initiative follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China during the President's recent State visit, aimed at growing sufficient agricultural products for the country.

The MoU, signed between Maldives Industrial Development Free Zone (MID) and China Harbor Engineering Company Limited, will establish an Agriculture Economic Zone (AEZ) in UTF by reclaiming land. President Muizzu revealed that 200 hectares of land will be reclaimed from UTF to develop it as the main hub for agricultural produce.

The President emphasized that agriculture operations will expand to meet the demands of the people, with similar projects planned for islands in the north and south. This expansion aims to grow fruits and vegetables locally to reduce import costs and boost the Maldivian economy.

Despite previous development plans for UTF, including a Coast Guard dockyard initiated by the previous administration, the current government is committed to utilizing the island for agricultural purposes.
