Nominees for Tax Commissioner: Yazeed Mohamed and Hassan Zareer
The nominations were officially conveyed to Parliament via a formal letter, with the Speaker referring them to the relevant parliamentary committee for evaluation.
In a recent committee vote, Yazeed garnered 4 votes, while Zareer secured 10 votes.
The nominations aim to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the current Tax Commissioner, Fathuhullah Jameel, who stepped down to contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Both Yazeed and Zareer boast extensive experience in tax administration, having previously held key positions within the tax authority.
Their nominations come as the government strives to ensure continuity and efficiency in tax administration amidst changing leadership.
Yazeed and Zareer previously served as tax commissioners until 2019, when an amendment to the Administrative Taxation Act during the ruling MDP's tenure led to their departure.
Despite the availability of the positions, neither Yazeed nor Zareer vied for the roles at that time.
However, their current nominations signal a re-entry into the tax administration sphere, presenting an opportunity to once again contribute to the country's revenue management endeavors.
The nominations will undergo thorough scrutiny by the parliamentary committee before any final decisions are made.
If approved, either Yazeed or Zareer will assume the vital role of Tax Commissioner, tasked with overseeing taxation policies and operations in the Maldives.
