Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef, the former Chief of Defense Force who currently serves as a State Minister at the Foreign Ministry, is set to be appointed as the Maldivian Ambassador to Turkey.

Abdul Raheem retired from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) on April 18 at the age of 60 after serving in the army for 39 years, adhering to the Army Forces Act.

The exact date of Abdul Raheem's appointment as State Minister is unclear. However, in a post on X on Monday, the Foreign Ministry disclosed his meeting with a delegation from the Montana National Guards in his capacity as State Minister.

A senior government official confirmed that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to nominate Abdul Raheem as the first Maldivian Ambassador to Turkey. His nomination is expected to be presented to Parliament for approval soon.

On December 10, 2023, the government announced the establishment of a Maldives embassy in Turkey for the first time, aiming to bolster bilateral relations and provide services to Maldivians in the country.

Abdul Raheem, who is slated to become Ambassador to Turkey, began his military career on February 18, 1985, serving in the "Signals" Department. He underwent specialized training in radio technology in the United States, earning top honors in the course.
