Parliament Urges Swift Trial in Nasheed's Assassination Attempt

Parliament Speaker Mohammed Aslam has urged for an expeditious trial concerning the assassination attempt on former president Mohammed Nasheed, marking the third anniversary of the May 6 attack.

Addressing the opening session of parliament on Monday, Aslam emphasized the significance of swiftly concluding investigations and trials related to the incident.

He also called for the full implementation of recommendations put forth by a special parliamentary inquiry conducted following the attack. Aslam stressed the importance of eradicating extremism and religious violence from the Maldives. Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed, who was arrested and charged in connection with the attack, pleaded guilty under a plea deal and received a 23-year prison sentence. However, trials for six others implicated in the case are ongoing.

Recommendations from the parliamentary inquiry included measures such as deploying armed soldiers to monitor Nasheed's residence and enacting special legislation to address intelligence access conflicts. Additionally, the Democratic Party, founded by Nasheed, expressed concern over the delay in achieving justice for him, emphasizing the severity of the attack and the lack of accountability for those responsible. They condemned the failure to protect Nasheed despite prior intelligence warnings of assassination plots against him.
