Economic Ministry commences discussions with USPTO regarding Trademark Bill

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, in collaboration with Maldives Customs Service and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), has launched a seminar today to discuss the upcoming Trademark Bill slated for submission to Parliament.

Over the course of two days, experts will delve into various aspects of the bill, while employees from relevant agencies will receive training on trademark rights. This includes guidance on registration requirements, the registration process itself, and potential challenges that may arise.

Participants from the Economic Ministry, Maldives Customs Service, Attorney General's Office, Prosecutor General's Office, Youth Ministry, Maldives Police Service, Bar Council, and Business Center Corporation are engaging in the seminar, scheduled to conclude tomorrow.

As part of ongoing efforts to fortify intellectual property rights in the country, the Economic Ministry has already proposed amendments to the Copyrights Act and other pertinent legislation. These measures aim to safeguard intellectual property, optimize business assets, and enhance investor confidence in the local business landscape.

The Economic Ministry aims to present the Trademark Bill to Parliament within the current year, while also progressing on formulating legislation related to patents and geographical indications. Additionally, plans are underway to establish a collective management organization to ensure fair royalties for individuals involved in literary and artistic endeavors.
