Six Independent MPs Join Maldives Ruling Party, Bolstering Supermajority

Six independent MPs who secured seats in the recent parliamentary elections have decided to join the ruling Peoples National Congress (PNC), thereby significantly strengthening its hold with a parliamentary supermajority.

In a ceremony held at Muliaage, the official residence of President Mohammed Muizzu, the six MPs formally signed up with the PNC in the presence of the President and Cabinet Ministers. The announcement was made through a post on PNC’s social media platform.

The newly joined MPs are as follows:

  1. Dr. Annaara Naeem from Huraa Constituency
  2. Hassan Zareer from Mathiveri Constituency
  3. Ahmed Zameer from Mahchangolhi Central Constituency
  4. Ahmed Riyaz from Thimarafushi Constituency
  5. Yaseen Abdullah from Naifaru Constituency
  6. Azim Abdul Azeez from Villingili Constituency

It’s notable that all but two of these MPs contested independently, although they had government support. Yaseen and Azim, however, did not have government backing during their campaigns.

With these six MPs joining the PNC, the party's parliamentary strength now stands at 72 members in the 20th parliament, establishing an indisputable supermajority. When combined with the seats held by allied parties such as JP, MDA, and MNP, the pro-government bloc’s membership will increase to 76 out of the total 93 seats in the Majlis.
