Govt- CAMCE signing Maritime Hub contract

Controversy Surrounds Chinese Company's Contract in the Maldives

The Maldives government recently awarded China CAMC Engineering Company Limited (CAMCE) contracts to re-develop the Kadhdhoo airport and establish a maritime hub in Laamu atoll. Despite limited details provided about the projects, CAMCE's involvement has raised concerns due to its controversial track record.

CAMCE, blacklisted by major international banks for corruption, has faced scrutiny for its questionable practices in various projects across Asia and South America. Notably, the company is on the World Bank's Listing of Ineligible Firms and Individuals and the Asian Development Bank's anti-corruption debarment list.

In Nepal, CAMCE's involvement in the construction of Pokhara airport sparked controversy over inflated costs and poor quality. Similar concerns arose in Sri Lanka's Gin Nilwala River project, where an advance payment of USD 30 million was made without proper transparency.

In Bolivia, CAMCE's ties to former President Evo Morales's administration led to allegations of project awards through bribery. Meanwhile, in Venezuela, the company's failure to deliver on promised projects despite receiving substantial payments has raised serious questions about its integrity.

As the Maldives proceeds with CAMCE for key infrastructure projects, the government faces mounting pressure to address concerns about the company's reputation and past misconduct.
