MATATO Meeting with Indian High Commissioner

Discussions to Boost Maldives-India Tourism Ties

Discussions were recently conducted between the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) and the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, Munu Mahawar, with the aim of strengthening cooperation in the travel and tourism sector between the Maldives and India.

This dialogue occurred during a meeting held at the Indian High Commission in the Maldives.

In a statement regarding the meeting, MATATO expressed their keenness to collaborate closely with the Indian High Commission in the Maldives to enhance tourism initiatives. As part of this effort, plans are underway to organize an extensive roadshow across major Indian cities and facilitate familiarization trips for influencers and media to the Maldives in the coming months.

While acknowledging India's significant role as a tourist market for the Maldives, MATATO expressed their eagerness to collaborate with leading travel associations and industry stakeholders in India to further promote the Maldives as a premier travel destination.

The meeting with the Indian High Commissioner was viewed by MATATO as a testament to their ongoing commitment to fostering strong tourism ties between the Maldives and India, aiming to facilitate transformative collaborations that will drive sustainable growth in the region's tourism sector.

Despite India ranking as the top tourist market for the Maldives last year, it currently stands at sixth place in terms of tourist arrivals, with 37,417 visitors representing 5.6 percent of the total 1,878,543 arrivals as of April 10th.

However, MATATO remains optimistic about reversing the decline in Indian tourist arrivals with support from industry and government agencies. They emphasized their innovative strategies aimed at tapping into India's growing tourism market, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in navigating evolving industry landscapes.
