A powerful earthquake struck Taiwan

A powerful earthquake struck Taiwan, causing widespread damage and resulting in at least seven fatalities and over 700 injuries.

The magnitude-7.4 quake hit near Hualien City, with its epicenter 18 kilometers south of the city. Among the casualties were hikers crushed by boulders and a truck driver caught in a landslide.

The earthquake caused landslides, road damage, and building collapses across the affected region, particularly in the mountainous areas. Social media circulated videos and images showing buildings swaying and collapsing.

Despite the significant impact, strict building regulations and disaster preparedness helped mitigate further devastation. The quake was the strongest since 1999, but Taiwan's awareness and response systems helped prevent a more catastrophic outcome.

Tsunami warnings were issued for Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines initially but were later lifted. The earthquake also affected regions in China and Hong Kong.

Taiwan's President called for coordinated efforts between local and central agencies, with the national army providing support. Industries, including chip manufacturing and construction, experienced interruptions due to the quake.
